United States Deaf Cycling Association

      PROGRAM

A popular sport worldwide, cycling is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States. One of every three Americans owns a bike. An increasing number of them are joining the ranks of competitive cyclists.

What does it take to be a competitive cyclist? Strength, stamina, speed and sharpness are qualities that make a good cyclist; becoming a great cyclist requires hard work and perseverance, as Paul Wood, John Funk, Jon Schmitz, Richard Baraona and some others will attest. For these athletes, joining the United States Deaf Cycling Association (USDCA) was the first step towards becoming great cyclists. It should be your first step as well.

      WHAT IS THE USDCA?

The USDCA is the national sport organization (NSO) for competitive cycling of the U.S.A. Deaf Sports Federation (formerly AAAD) U.S. Team Committee. It is responsible for developing, training, coaching and selecting cyclists to compete in such events as the World Games for the Deaf, World Championships and other events. It is the grass root foundation of deaf cycling activity in America. It promotes activities for beginners such as training rides, clinics, races and social activities which introduce a rider to other competitors and proper cycling techniques. In these sessions, members are taught the correct riding position, training techniques, racing rules and bicycle maintenance.

      CURRENT USDCA PROGRAMS

Sessions are conducted to help current and aspiring national-level riders get off to a strong start at the beginning of the season and to prepare them prior to international competition. USDCA has long-term goals to tie in strongly with the USCF for its great benefits and programs. It has a four-year cycle: the first year which is for national championships, second year - world championships, third year - national championships and fourth year - World Games for the Deaf.

      USA NATIONAL TEAM PROGRAM

Beginning in 1974 and leading up to now, a major focus of the USDCA was the success of the USA Deaf Cycling team in international competition. By creating a year-round training program, the USA has established a tradition of excellence for its national team.
